Arsenal and Chelsea have been left in the dark and their furious supporters vowing to call on London Mayor Sadiq Khan after the Met Police ordered the rearrangement of their upcoming clash at short notice.
The game that was originally due to take place at 5.30pm on Saturday April 29 will now take place a few days later on Tuesday May 2, kicking off at 8pm, with fans labelling the alteration an example of them being ‘treated with complete contempt.’
A date and time for the London derby had already been arranged in February following talks between broadcasters Sky and the Safety Advisory Group which includes the Premier League, both clubs, the police and local authorities.
However havoc has now been caused with supporters’ plans, and a blame-game broken out, after the police changed their stance resulting in the match being rearranged just 18 days before it was scheduled to take place.
The Met claim the new date was chosen by ‘football partners’ after their request for the kick-off time to be brought forward on April 29 ‘was declined.’

The Metropolitan Police, it is believed, do not have the resources to safely police the fixture on Saturday April 29. They blamed Sky Sports for the fixture being moved in a statement
Little explanation is understood to have been given to the clubs about why a change of kick-off time was needed other than the police no longer being able to guarantee that they can safely manage the previously agreed fixture.
Exactly why that became the case remained unclear. It is also unknown why the issue about the earlier kick-off time was not resolved sooner, with police having been part of discussions when that was previously confirmed.
The move has caused widespread confusion, disappointment and anger from all impacted.
A joint statement from the supporters’ trusts of Arsenal and Chelsea read: ‘It is totally unacceptable that with 18 days until the fixture, it has been announced that Arsenal v Chelsea will be postponed and re-arranged.
‘We are deeply disappointed that a confirmed fixture has been moved after both clubs, the broadcaster, the Safety Advisory Group and the police had been confirmed it. This is an insult to those supporters who are attending.
‘This is not the first time that arbitrary and unaccountable decisions have been made by the police that adversely impact our clubs and supporters.
‘This decision will create a major inconvenience to supporters who will have already made travel and accommodation arrangements and will negatively impact those supporters attending the fixture.

‘The AST and CST call on the Premier League to provide a fuller explanation behind these issues. We will in turn take this matter to the Mayor of London who oversees the Metropolitan Police.
‘Supporters are being treated with complete contempt.’
A statement from the Met explained they have been in discussions about an earlier kick-off time since February after being notified of TV plans to schedule the game for 5.30pm.
‘This was as a preventive and proactive measure to help mitigate Antisocial Behaviour and crime associated with later weekend kick-offs,’ the statement read.
‘The Met suggested an earlier kick-off time on 29 April to minimise crime and disorder and the impact on fans, which was declined by football partners who instead chose to play the fixture on an alternative date. A new date of Tuesday 2 May at 20:00hrs has now been agreed.’
A number of all-London evening clashes have had the go-ahead to take place on or close to weekends including Arsenal’s season opener at Palace, West Ham’s Boxing Day trip to the Emirates and derbies involving Chelsea and Brentford both hosting Fulham.
The game will be one of Arsenal’s key fixtures in their pursuit of the title.
They will now have more time to recover from their Wednesday April 26 trip to biggest rivals Manchester City but less time to prepare for their trip to Newcastle on Sunday May 7.
Arsenal’s displeasure at the situation was evident in their statement, which read: ‘This change has been made as a result of the Metropolitan Police revising its position on policing the match.
‘After working to try to find a solution with the Met Police, we are very disappointed with the impact and disruption this fixture change will cause to our supporters, particularly after this match had been initially approved for a Saturday evening kick-off.’
In a statement, the Premier League said: ‘The initial scheduling of this match was approved at a Safety Advisory Group (SAG) meeting in February.
‘However, the Metropolitan Police has now revised its position regarding the kick-off time and requested a further SAG meeting which determined the match had to be re-scheduled.
‘We regret the need to move this fixture at late notice and the impact this will have on supporters. The game will remain live on Sky Sports.’
