Rugby Australia (RA) is reeling after CEO Andy Marinos suddenly resigned just four months out from the World Cup in a bombshell move.
The 50-year-old ex-union and league professional, who has gone on to build a respected career in administration, will stand down in June after first starting as CEO in February 2021.
It’s a shock move that no one saw coming, particularly after it was announced last week RA had reported a huge turnaround in its financial fortunes, with an $8.2million surplus reported and the World Cup in France set to begin in September.
It is believed that Wallabies legend Phil Waugh, a current RA board member who holds two Masters degrees, is one of the leading candidates to replace Marinos.
Former NRL boss and current chief of the Australian Cricketers Association players union Todd Greenberg is also believed to be in the running.

RA confirmed his shock exit in a statement on Monday afternoon.
‘Rugby Australia (RA) confirms that Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Andy Marinos, has decided to leave his role in the coming weeks to pursue new opportunities,’ the statement read.
‘Marinos joined RA in February 2021, with a specific mandate to secure the immediate and long-term future of Rugby in Australia, at a time when sporting codes globally were grappling with the commercial and operational impacts of COVID-19.
‘In his two years, Marinos has overseen significant change for Rugby in Australia, including the financial turnaround from a $27.1 million loss in 2020 to a $8.2 million profit for 2022, as announced at the recent Annual General Meeting.
‘Rugby Australia has subsequently commenced a recruitment process. Marinos will remain at RA until mid-June to assist with a transition period for the business.’
It is very curious timing given not only the upcoming World Cup and good financial results, but the fact RA launched the ticketing period for the home Rugby Championship matches Down Under to much pomp and circumstance at the MCG on Monday morning.

Just hours later came the shock news of Marinos resignation.
Right at the end of a crucial four-year World Cup cycle, two years into his tenure and months after he copped significant flak for taking a break when ex-coach Dave Rennie was sacked.
Rennie was sacked by Marinos via Zoom because he was on holiday in South Africa, and he remained there despite the organisation desperately needing to nut a new contracting model for players.
Despite that, RA chairman Hamish McLennan, who has been under-fire himself for a childish war of words with the NRL, thanked Marinos for ‘his contributions’ and highlighted the good work he has done in his short tenure.
‘We (Rugby Australia’ asked Andy to draw upon his impressive career experience and extensive global relationships to re-establish Rugby as a leading code in Australia – he has delivered on this and been fundamental in the turnaround of the business,’ he said in a statement.
‘Andy will leave RA having delivered several key projects, including the finalisation of the 2027 and 2029 Rugby World Cups, locking in the 2025 British and Irish Lions Tour, planning for a new contracting model for the professional game, implementation of strategy to professionalise Women’s XVs Rugby, and a new four-year Collective Bargaining Agreement for our professional men’s and women’s players.’

It was only last week when McLennan was lauding a huge turnaround for the organisation, that sunk to depths it had never seen before during the pandemic.
RA went from a deficit of $27million to a surplus of $8million in just three years – though questions remain whether they have spent enough on rugby – be it the Wallabies, grassroots, women or Super Rugby – for that to be considered a good thing.
Either way, McLennan credited Marinos for a big part of the surplus, but conceded there was still a long road ahead for the under-fire organisation.
‘We made a surplus of 8.2 million, so I think you all know where we were a few years ago, where we lost close to $27 million through the horrible COVID-19 pandemic,’ he said last week when announcing the results of 2022.
‘All the credit should go to Andy and the management team for really turning the business around.’
In other case of curious timing just days out from Marinos’ shock resignation, McLennan said it was a relief the ‘whole organisation is on a firm footing’.
‘We’ve got a lot of challenges ahead of us. But with the World Cup coming up this year, the golden decade, Eddie Jones arriving, there’s also a lot to look forward to,’ he said.
‘At least now we’ve got the whole organisation on a firm footing and sponsors are coming in and we’re delighted with our relationship with our broadcast partners. It’s very positive for us.’

Marinos is the third CEO to depart Rugby Australia in just three years, after interim boss Rob Clarke stood in following Raelene Castle’s unceremonious axing.
He lauded the ‘work ethic’ and ‘commitment’ of RA stuff, and was thankful for his opportunity. He is leaving to pursue other endeavours.
‘I cannot overstate the commitment and incredible work ethic of the people around me at RA, and the roles they have played in helping drive some critical structural changes for Rugby in this country,’ Marinos said in RA’s statement.
‘The foundations have been established and the business is now well-prepared to test the market for private equity investment, making it the right time for me to move on.
‘Importantly, I will leave with the knowledge that RA is in a stronger position than when I joined, and proud of what has been achieved in my tenure as CEO.’
